Meet the Winemaker-Instructor: Dave Zuchero
Dave Zuchero is the head winemaker and instructor at Tin Lizzie Wineworks. Dave first learned to make wine at his father’s side over 40 years ago and has been improving the process ever since. “Wine making and enjoying wine has been a central part of our family life for as far back as I can remember,” he says. The 75-year-old family wine press that Dave, his father John and his grandfather Angelo used to make wine is on display at the Wineworks as a tribute to the Zuchero family’s winemaking history.
“Making good wine is the ultimate combination of art and science,” says Dave. To that end, he earned a Winemaking Certificate from the University of California at Davis, the leading winemaking school in the US, and a BS degree in Microbiology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is also a member of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture.
Dave has won numerous awards for his wines. In 2008 Dave won over a dozen awards for his wines, including a gold medal in an international winemaking competition, both first and second places at the Maryland State Fair and Grand Champion at the Montgomery County Fair.
In his day job, Dave is a consultant for the pharmaceutical industry helping companies get FDA approval for new medicines. To find out more about making wine email Dave.
